Are you having family or friends, or both, over for a traditional Easter gathering? Hopefully this celebratory spring feast will be accompanied by some good wine.

LAMB

If you are preparing lamb, your choice of wine is relatively simple compared to other meals. The savory nature of roast leg of lamb, especially if it's rubbed with garlic and rosemary, needs a fruit-forward red. Although a quality dry red wine will likely do in a pinch, we suggest a quality Cabernet Sauvignon if you want to create the perfect match.

The well-structured, tannic nature of Cabernet Sauvignon tends to mellow out the high meat protein. Cabs also offer flavors and aromas that nicely complement the gaminess of lamb.

Other wine suggestions for pairing with lamb are a Syrah, or Shiraz (as they call it in Australia), or a Cabernet Franc.

HAM

Perhaps a succulent ham is on the menu. When compared to lamb, ham tends to be more salty and smoky, so you need a fresh white wine with good acidity and a hint of sweetness, yet dry in the finish. A good choice would be a light and fruity Riesling from Germany.

Another good match would be a dry Gewurztraminer, or a fruity rosé with nice aromatics and a dry finish, to counter the saltiness.

Don't serve Cabernets, which will compound the saltiness of the ham, take away from the flavors of the meal and have you asking for water to quench your salt-induced thirst.

If you MUST have a red with your ham then choose a Beaujolais or Pinot Noir.
