The Famous Grouse

History

Named after the Red Grouse, Scotland 's national game bird, The Famous Grouse was born in the late 1800's. Matthew Gloag, while running his family's grocery and wine business, hatched the idea to meet the demand for house-labeled blended whisky and thus created the Grouse Brand. So close to home was the brand, that Matthew's daughter, Philippa, actually created the original sketch for its renowned trademark. The Grouse Brand became so sought after that it was soon renamed The Famous Grouse.

The Famous Grouse

The Famous Grouse is the best selling Scotch in Scotland and one of the easiest to drink. It is medium bodied, smooth, and has other qualities like fruitiness with a hint of peat. Every Scotch whisky reaches the peak of its quality at a different age - some are younger and some are much, much older.

Because The Famous Grouse carefully selects only the finest Scotch whiskies from the widest choice of ages available, only those at their peak are blended together to create a balanced and well-rounded whisky of the highest quality. The Famous Grouse holds a unique cask selection policy including use of a higher proportion of Spanish sherry casks than their competitors. Great care is taken to ensure that the Scotch Whiskies which are blended together to create The Famous Grouse mature in specially commissioned hand crafted oak wood sherry casks of the highest quality. These impart a distinctive mellow flavor.

After selection of the finest malts, there follows a unique marriage process when the matured whiskies are left to blend together, bringing out the best in each other and creating an unrivalled consistency as well as the final harmony and distinctive smoothness that is The Famous Grouse. Typically the malt and grain whiskies marry together for six months before bottling.
