Good Scotch for Hard Times
By Jennifer Matthews
Every home bar, at least at the intermediate level, should stock one decent bottle of scotch. But the definition of “decent” can vary widely, and scotch prices can top out in the hundreds of dollars. If you’re looking for something good to offer guests (and yourself) during this era of tighter wallets, we have some recommendations. Ian Innes, owner of The Feathers Pub in Toronto, which houses a collection of more than 450 single malts, names his top three picks for stocking your home bar. Each represents a different area of Scotland, all can be had for $75 or less, and all should be available at most liquor stores.
Ian Innes’ Good-Value Scotches for the Home Bar
- Dalmore 12-year-old (from Highland)
- The Macallan Cask Strength (from Speyside)
- Highland Park 12-year-old (from Orkney)
Aspiring collectors might also be interested in Innes’ personal favourite (which is definitely not in the $75 range): “A 1965 cask-strength Auchentoshan. Pure heaven.”
