Nine Ways to Show Mom You Care
We know, we know—you’re supposed to show Mom you love her every day of the year. But for those of us who fall a little short of the mark, Mother’s Day offers an opportunity to do something really special for that special woman in our lives. Whatever you do to mark the occasion, be sure to spend time with Mom, in person or on the phone—chances are, that’s what will mean the most.
1. Make her brunch. Invite her over and meet her at the door with a Sweet Rose, champagne mimosa, or a Glamour Girl Cocktail and a flower. The meal doesn’t have to be fussy—just set a pretty table, whip up an omelette, and enjoy each other’s company.
2. Help her start a new hobby. If she’s always been interested in pottery, sign her up for classes. If she’s a wine enthusiast, buy her tickets to a wine show or tasting, or make a grand gesture (perhaps as a group gift) and start a wine cellar for her.
3. Surprise her with a family photo. Organize a group sitting and present her with a photo of her children (and grandchildren), or with the sitting date for a portrait that will include her as well.
4. Take her out on the town. What mom wouldn’t enjoy dinner and a show with her favorite child?
5. Take her to tea. High tea, that is. Long a staple of exclusive hotels, afternoon tea is growing in popularity, and tearooms are popping up across the continent. Wear something other than jeans, comb your hair, and remember to pull out Mom’s chair for her.
6. Pamper her. Indulge Mom with a day at the spa, to be booked at a time of her choosing.
7. Create a stepping stone (or stones) for her garden. Purchase a kit or make your own using cement, embellishments (marbles, gems, etc.) and a mold (anything from a cake pan to a cross-section of plastic or cardboard pipe). Be sure to follow the directions on the cement package carefully. Allow two to three days before removing the stone from the mold, and wait a week before stepping on the stone or placing it in the garden. Be creative—stepping stones are a great way to preserve hand or paw prints, or even parts of a special (but broken) teacup.
8. Give her a charm bracelet. These have made quite a comeback recently, and locket charms with grandchildren’s photos, or charms representing memorable life events or trips are sure to create a treasure she’ll love—and wear.
9. Create a family memory book. Have each member of the family record his or her memories of special times or events in the family’s history, and include photos. You’ll end up with an heirloom that the whole family will cherish.
