Get Outside - Hosting the perfect party in your own backyard

The lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us once again. And, in our opinion, the best cure for a lingering case of winter cabin fever is a frosty drink sipped on the patio with friends!

Step 2: Serve simple, delicious food

While it's true that the way to just about everyone's heart is through his or her stomach, you don't have to serve a gourmet smorgasbord to make guests happy. Save the soufflé for intimate dinners - simple is better when it comes to groups.

Make life easy - Do as much as possible in advance to avoid a last-minute rush. If you're pressed for time, buy prepared fruit and veggie trays, deli salads, and marinated meat. If you're making your own marinades, meat can be marinated in the fridge 24 hours before the party. If you're picnicking, keep things simple by toting finger foods: cold fried chicken, crusty buns, cheese and crackers, cut-up watermelon. The fussier the meal, the more accessories you'll have to remember.

Give the cook some space - Most of us have our barbecue near the back door. While this is convenient for grilling dinner for the family, it places the cook in the highest-traffic area during a larger gathering. If possible, move the grill to an out-of-the-way spot in the yard. To save the cook trips to and from the kitchen, make sure there's a table beside the barbecue, equipped with utensils, sauces and anything else the Designed Barbecuer will need to get the food ready. Consider using two grills if you're hosting a large crowd. And don't forget to provide the cook with a frosty drink.

Don't forget the veggies - Vegetarians, that is. More and more people are opting to go meatless, for health and other reasons. Having some veggie burgers and hot dogs on hand ensures that everyone can enjoy the meal.

Be bug-free - Minimize worries about flies and bugs (and keeping food cool) by setting up the buffet table inside. Guests can come in, fill their plates, and head back outside. Have some insect repellent on hand in case mosquitoes become an issue. Before the party, check the yard for anthills and clear them out.

Make cleanup a breeze -- Tuck a garbage can and recycling bins outside; they should be out of the way but visible enough for guests to use them.

Tip

Good manners make good neighbours. Keep the peace by letting your neighbours know in advance that you'll be having a party, and assure them that you'll try to keep the noise to a minimum. Better yet, invite them to join you!
