Our quick (and unscientific) look at some of the trends and news we find interesting and relevant.

CHEERS - TV Show Trivia

For some the popular TV show Cheers was truly the closest we had to a neighborhood bar we could call our own.  Over 11 seasons we got to know the cast of characters - picked our favorites and laughed.

The show inspired spin offs - the obvious "Frasier",and the less obvious "The Tortellis", trivia games, books, and of course lots of drinking games. Even big fans of the show (like we confess we are) may be surprised by this collection of "Six behind the scenes secrets from Cheers."

"Join us under the wing at our restaurant or in the fuselage at our pub"

Enjoy a drink in an airplane bar - An 'Iran Contra" related airplane bar! This would have to qualify as both a unique and off the beaten track bar. The restaurant bar in Costa Rica called the "El Avion" restaurant (even we can translate that) is home to a true relic of the mid 80's "Iran Contra" - Oliver North scandal of the Reagan era.

The main part of the bar is in fact a Fairchild C-123 - left behind as the "contra" deal began to unravel. Bought for $3,000 by the bars owners the tale of the airplane moving to its new location is almost as interesting as its history.

Dita Von Teese

Wine that tastes like "Big League Chew," "Cocoa Puffs" and "grape-flavored Nerds candy."

The YouTube Wine Guru:

You may have heard that there is a popular wine feature on YouTube featuring a young off the wall and seemingly talented wine expert. One of our favorite writers Beppi Crosariol of the Globe and Mail highlights and interviews this young internet star.  Included in the article are links to some of his YouTube videos.

Canadian Whisky: "Not Just Brown Vodka"

In another article by Beppi Crosariol, this time on the success of Kittling Ridge's Forty Creek Barrel Select Whisky, we were reminded of some other great tasting Canadian Whisky.  Three different, and in our opinion, great, Canadian Whiskies - Lot No. 40, Pike Creek and Gooderham & Worts, were produced by Corbys and were collectively known as the Canadian Whisky Guild. As the author notes they are "regrettably no longer available." What a shame Corbys gave up on them.

Thanks to the success of products like Forty Creek maybe we will see more new and unique Canadian Whisky products produced to compliment Canada's great whisky tradition

The Health Pros and Cons of Drinking

In the ongoing debate and discussions about alcohol and health this article from CNN.com offers up an interesting and unique look at the topic. In this article "experts make sense of the contradictions and help four drinkers (and one abstainer) find the healthiest imbibing strategy."
