Our quick (and unscientific) look at some of the trends and news
we find interesting and relevant
Candidate cocktails
A cocktail "is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion inasmuch as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head," said Harry Croswell, editor of The Balance, in 1806.
One of our favorite writers brings you a quick history of the pairings of cocktails with those among us brave enough to seek public office. Eric Felton of The Wall Street Journal walks his readers through the history of "Cocktails for Candidates" and even commissioned the creation of three cocktails to properly represent the candidates left in the running. Read the full article and match these drinks to the candidate: "The Skyhawk," the "Hill Raiser" and "Some Punch For a Change."
Wine and song pairings
Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland report that different types of music can "greatly influence" how one perceives the flavor of wine.
Read how their study helped one Chilean winemaker come up with this list of which music to listen to while you're enjoying a glass of wine.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON:
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix; Honky-Tonk Woman by The Rolling Stones; Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney; Won't Get
Fooled Again by The Who.
CHARDONNAY:
Atomic by Blondie; Rock DJ by Robbie Williams; What's Love Got to do With It by Tina Turner; Spinning Around by Kylie Minogue.
SHIRAZ:
Puccini's Nessun Dorma as sung by Luciano Pavarotti; Orinoco Flow by Enya; Chariots of Fire by Vangelis; Canon by Johann Pachelbel.
MERLOT:
Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding; Easy by Lionel Ritchie; Over The Rainbow by Eva Cassidy; Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez
Whether you agree or disagree with these pairings, it does make for a fun discussion. How come we never get asked to be part of this kind of study?
