FACT or FOLKLORE?
DAIQUIRIS
|
It is believed that this libation was first conceived in the small Cuban town of Daiquiri. Legend has it that an outbreak of malaria forced local doctors to prescribe the only medicine available to them, RUM. Some foreigners working nearby suggested that lime and sugar be added to help the medicine go down! It didn't take long before everyone, including the healthy, were partaking in this cocktail.
The Daiquiri's classic recipe of a jigger of rum, a teaspoon of simple syrup, and an ounce of lime juice is deceptively simple. Too much rum, and the taste becomes overpowering; too much lime, and it's bitter and sharp; too much sugar, and you might as well toss it out.
The first official printed mention of the Daiquiri appears in F.Scott Fitzgerald's 1920 novel, This side of Paradise.
HINTDue to their sugar content, any appropriately flavoured liqueur can replace sugar syrup. |
