ICE TEA - the perfect pleasure!
Most historians agree, Richard Blechyden can be credited with making iced tea a favourite beverage around the world. It all began at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mr. Blechyden, a tea plantation owner, had hoped to offer free samples of his fine tea to the patrons of the fair, but didn’t anticipate how hot that summer would be. Although tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water, people just weren’t interested in a hot drink on a sweltering day.
Unperturbed, he decided to serve his brewed tea over ice. His invention was a hit. Word spread quickly and he soon had eager park visitors lining up for a taste of his cool treat.
To celebrate Mr. Blechyden’s ingenuity, we present a few new twists on this 100 year old favourite.
