40 YEARS AGO TODAY
The Caesar, also known as the Bloody Caesar, was developed to celebrate the opening of Marco's Italian restaurant at the Calgary Inn in 1969.
Bartender and mixologist Walter Chell spent three months creating this new cocktail. Challenged to create a beverage that went well with Mediterranean food, Walter Chell mixed flavours of Spaghetti Vongole (spaghetti with clams), with lime, Worcestershire sauce and celery salt to create this new unique taste.
The original Caesar cocktail recipe was similar to the already popular Bloody Mary cocktail, with one major exception – the addition of
mashed clams blended into the tomato juice.
