10 Hot Drinks for the Christmas Holiday

Does anyone else want to fight off the winter chill? We can't think of a better way to do that than to enjoy a hot delicious drink during the Christmas holiday. From the classic hot toddy and hot buittered rum to mulled cider and adult hot chocolate, give any one of our 10 collected hot drinks for the Christmas holidays a try. 1. HOT TODDY BASIC

Ingredients:

  • Generous pinch powdered cinnamon
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1-1/2 oz whiskey or brandy, rum, gin, or vodka
  • 1 oz sugar syrup or to taste
  • Boiling water
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Grated nutmeg
  • Lemon slice

Mixing instructions:

Warm a mug or old fashioned glass and add all ingredients, except nutmeg, and fill with boiling water. Stir and top with grated nutmeg. Garnish with cinnamon stick, if you wish.

Any type of whiskey, rum or brandy will make a good toddy. It is a matter of personal preference. Measurements are approximate, depending on how strong, sweet or spicy you want your toddy to be.

2. DOWN EAST HOT BUTTERED RUM

Ingredients:

  • 4 cloves (whole)
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 oz gold rum
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 lemon peel
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Grated nutmeg
  • Small pat butter

Mixing instructions:

In a warmed, heat-proof mug, add sugar and a little cider that has been heated to the boiling point. Stir until sugar is dissolved and add cinnamon, cloves, lemon peel and rum. Fill with hot cider, stir, and top with butter and grated nutmeg.

3. FLAMING HOT BUTTERED RUM

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 oz over proof rum 
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar 
  • 1 oz dark rum   
  • Boiling water
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Whole cloves
  • Grated nutmeg
  • Lemon or orange peel
  • Pinch sugar

Mixing instructions:

Rinse a large, heat-proof mug with boiling water, add sugar, cinnamon stick, and a lemon or orange peel studded with cloves. Pour in enough boiling water to dissolve sugar and stir in rum. Fill mug with boiling water and place pat of butter on top of drink.

Warm Demerara rum in a ladle, into which you have put a pinch of sugar, by partially immersing the bowl in hot water. Ignite rum and pour blazing into mug. Add a little additional butter, if you wish, and sprinkle with nutmeg.

4. HIGHLAND HOT MILK PUNCH

Ingredients:

Mixing instructions:

Heat all ingredients, except cinnamon, in a saucepan over low heat, stirring from time to time to prevent milk from scorching. Rinse a heat-proof mug with boiling water and fill with hot punch. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.

5. APPLE BARREL APRES-SKI TODDY

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 oz apple schnapps
  • 1 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 oz brandy
  • 1 tsp honey or to taste
  • Cinnamon stick

Mixing instructions:

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and heat until hot. Do not boil. Pour into a hot mug.
