"LET'S GET OUT OF THESE WET CLOTHES AND INTO A DRY MARTINI"...Robert Benchley

The Basic Martini Recipe:
  • 2 oz of gin,
  • a dash of extra dry Vermouth,
  • Stir, or shake gin and vermouth with ice.
  • Strain into a cocktail glass
  • Garnish with one or two olives or a twist of lemon.

But it's NOT so basic as best illustrated by this bit of Martini mythology:
An explorer setting out on a trek deep into an uncharted region is asked why he has packed a flask of gin, a shaker, a jar of olives and ice. The explorer responded ...." If I get lost in the woods I will simply begin to make a Martini, and as soon as I do someone will appear out of nowhere and show me a better way to make it".

SHAKEN vs STIRRED....what works best?

GIN vs VODKA...which one would you prefer?

GARNISHES: there is no definitive list of appropriate garnishes but see what we suggest.

The Dirty Martini. After ending prohibition, Franklin Roosevelt mixed the first legal Martini in the White House. Cocktails moved from the speakeasy to the legal bar and, finally to the living room, where, along with the radio, the cocktail hour became an American institution.

When Franklin met with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in Tehran, he offered each his favorite Dirty Martini: two parts gin, one part vermouth, and a dose of olive brine.

HISTORY: There are as many variations and theories of how the drink was invented, and by whom, as there are variations of the recipe itself. One of the popular theories is that the predecessor of the Martini was the MARTINEZ. This cocktail was invented by a bartender named Jerry Thomas of San Francisco in the late 1800's.

Bartender's Favorite question: Is this really as dry as you can make it? Ask that question enough and all you will get is a very cold serving of vodka or gin. You have then moved from a cocktail / martini to a shooter.

TRIVIA
Was the martini named after a rifle known as the " Martini and Henry". If so, the explanation seems to be that they are both known for their kick.

To ensure getting a dry Martini.." The secret is not to pour the vermouth , just to pretend you're pouring it" WINSTON CHURCHILL
